Non sarà bonificata quella che da più parti è stata definita come una delle “discariche dei veleni” più grandi d’Europa. Il Ministero dell’Ambiente, in accordo con la Regione Calabria, ha stanziato per il territorio calabrese 46 milioni di euro per le bonifiche ambientali delle aree inquinate, ma fra queste non rientra la tristemente nota ex Fornace “La Tranquilla” di San Calogero, dove il 2 giugno è stato ucciso con un colpo di fucile Soumaila Sacko, il migrante regolare del Mali, sindacalista dell’Usb, che si era recato nell’area insieme a due compagni della tendopoli di San Ferdinando per prelevare delle vecchie lamiere. A protestare contro il mancato inserimento da parte del Ministero dell’Ambiente del sito di San Calogero fra le aree da bonificare, è oggi l’Unione per la difesa dei consumatori (Udicon), attraverso il suo presidente nazionale, Denis Nesci. L’Udicon denuncia l’aumento vertiginoso di patologie tumorali fra gli abitanti della zona, ricompresa in una vasta area al confine fra i comuni di San Calogero, Mileto e Rosarno. Nell’ex fornace sono sotterrate 127mila tonnellate di rifiuti pericolosi provenienti per la quasi totalità dalla centrale termoelettrica di Brindisi, finiti illegalmente nella discarica di impianti di San Calogero. Una gestione illecita di rifiuti per la quale, dinanzi al Tribunale di Vibo Valentia si trovano imputate 12 persone, accusate di disastro colposo nel processo nato dall’operazione “Poison”. Il giro d’affari al centro dell’inchiesta si aggira sui 18 milioni di euro perché tanto, secondo l’accusa, sarebbe costato il regolare smaltimento dei rifiuti a Brindisi, Priolo Gargallo e Termini Imerese. “Chiederemo – dichiara Denis Nesci – al Governo ed alla Regione Calabria di assumere con immediatezza iniziative per la tutela dell’ambiente e per capire lo stato di inquinamento, principalmente al fine di tutelare il diritto alla salute dei cittadini delle aree coinvolte”.
